The Rooftop on Basin sits atop the historic Basin St. Station.  Built in 1904 as the Southern Railway Freight Office, Basin St. Station was also originally used by the New Orleans Terminal Company.  The railroad vacated the building in 1975 and it sat empty for many years. The building was purchased and began renovation and restoration in 2004.  The front of the building has retained the stations’ 1904 classic architecture.

Today, Basin St. Station serves as a center of economic and cultural activities.  The first floor of the building is the city of New Orleans’ welcome center and houses educational community exhibits, a performance venue, and an authentically New Orleans and Louisiana gift shop.  The second and third floors are home to New Orleans' most exciting new boutique hotel, The Brakeman Hotel. The Rooftop on Basin encompasses the building's fourth floor.  The first floor is available for rent in conjunction with The Rooftop on Basin.
